Trump lawyers fight to have Georgia court case thrown out: Live

Donald Trump appears in New York court for hearing in hush money case

Donald Trump’s attorneys were back in court today fighting to have his Georgia election interference case thrown out.

The former president’s legal team argued that his false claims that the 2020 vote was stolen are protected under the First Amendment.

The hearing was the first in the case since the judge ruled that Fulton County district attorney Fani Willis could remain part of the prosecution.

It comes after Republican presidential candidate and part-time Bible salesman appeared to be testing out the boundaries of a new gag order imposed on him ahead of his hush money criminal trial in New York.

Judge Juan Merchan granted the request from Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg, which prohibits the former president from talking about anyone involved in the case or their families.

The former president had already lashed out at the judge and his daughter on Truth Social before the order was signed on Tuesday and then doubled down on his attack on Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, a California judge has said that former Trump attorney John Eastman should be stripped of his law license over his efforts to overturn the 2020 election on Mr Trump’s behalf

Trump will attend the wake of a slain New York police officer

The visitation for Officer Jonathan Diller, who was fatally shot during a traffic stop on Monday, will be held in suburban Massapequa. Police said 31-year-old Diller was shot below his bulletproof vest while approaching an illegally parked car in Queens.

Diller, who was married and had a 1-year-old son, was rushed to a hospital, where he died.

Mr Trump’s visit comes as Mr Biden will also be in New York for a previously scheduled fundraiser with Democratic ex-presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. Shortly after Mr Trump’s campaign announced he would attend the wake, a Republican Party account on social media posted headlines contrasting his planned visit with Mr Biden’s fundraiser.

Hunter Biden attorneys back in court as he seeks to have tax charges tossed

The federal judge overseeing an attempt by Hunter Biden to dismiss tax charges against him appeared sceptical of arguments put forward by lawyers for the president’s son in Los Angeles, saying there was little evidence that special counsel David Weiss had been influenced by Republicans.

The office of Mr Weiss has accused 54-year-old Mr Biden of not paying taxes on millions in income from business dealings abroad. Mr Biden, who was not present at the hearing on Wednesday, pleaded not guilty earlier this year.

Georgia election interference: Fulton County hearing adjourns

The Georgia election interference case in Fulton County has adjourned after approximately 90 minutes of arguments from defence lawyers and the District Attorney’s office regarding an attempt to dismiss the case against Donald Trump and his co-defendants on the grounds of the First Amendment.

Judge Scott McAfee has given no indication of how he may rule and there is still no indication of when the trial might get underway if he rules against the defendants’ motion.

DeSantis and Disney finally bring an end to two-year feud

The feud between Florida governor Ron DeSantis and Walt Disney World, sparked by the latter’s criticism of the state’s so-called “Don’t Say Gay” law, has ended after nearly two years.

On Wednesday morning, the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District approved a settlement between allies of Ron DeSantis and Disney.

The litigation first began when the House of Mouse criticised the 2022 law, which banned classroom lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity in early grades.

The governor, who had championed the legislation, subsequently took control of the district that governs Walt Disney World thanks to the state’s Republican-controlled legislature and appointed his own board of supervisors.

Disney sued, claiming their free speech rights were violated for speaking out against the law — but a federal judge threw out their case in January.

US district judge Allen Winsor determined that Disney lacks standing to sue the government, arguing that a “plaintiff cannot bring a free speech challenge by claiming that the lawmakers who passed it acted with a constitutionally impermissible purpose”.

Tonight: Star-studded Biden-Obama-Clinton fundraiser pulls ‘historic’ $25m haul in New York

The Independent’s White House correspondent Andrew Feinberg reports:

When it comes to hauling in cash for President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign, it’s now obvious that three presidential heads are always better than one.

That’s the lesson Biden-Harris campaign officials are taking away from a star-studded fundraiser to be held on Thursday evening at New York’s Radio City Music Hall, which is set to raise more than $25m for the president’s campaign coffers.

In a statement announcing what they described as the “historic” result, the campaign said the fundraiser, billed as “An Evening with President Biden and Presidents Obama and Clinton,” represents the “most successful political fundraiser in American history” with a 5,000-strong sellout crowd at the historic Manhattan venue and “thousands more” taking in the spectacle online.

Sexual assault lawsuit against CPAC’s Matt Schlapp is dropped

A man who once accused one of Washington DC’s highest-profile Republican operatives of sexually assaulting him has rescinded his allegations and says he regrets making them.

Matt Schlapp, head of the annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) gathering, was accused by a campaign staffer for then-Senate candidate Herschel Walker of groping him during a car ride in 2022 as the staffer, Carlton Huffman, drove Schlapp back to his hotel room.

Huffman further accused the CPAC big wig, who is married to a woman (former Trump White House staffer Mercedes Schlapp), of inviting him up to his hotel room.

Now, in a statement first obtained by Politico through his onetime legal opponent, Huffman bizarrely says the whole thing was a “misunderstanding”.

Here’s John Bowden to get to the bottom of it all.
