“You see these things on the news and you wouldn’t think it would happen, there where you live especially, to your own mother.

“I’m happy that she’s alive. Counting our blessings that she’s still here and alive, and breathing and with us.

“She’ll be OK, it’ll just be a slow process.”

Yvonne’s daughter Bella released a statement, saying: “On behalf of my family, I’m grateful to update everyone that our mum has been discharged from the hospital and is doing well with a smile on her face.

“We appreciate the outpouring of support and well wishes.

“She just left now, but she’s in good spirits, which is good.”

Six people were killed in the attack, in addition to the knifeman.

Four of the victims have now been identified – 38-year-old osteopath Ashlee Good, Dawn Singleton, 25-year-old daughter of multi-millionaire businessman John Singleton, security guard Faraz Tahir and mother-of-two Jade Young.

Earlier on Sunday, police identified the killer as 40-year-old Queensland man Joel Cauchi.

He had only recently moved to Sydney. He is understood to have been diagnosed with mental health issues as a teenager and had undergone treatment over the years.

He was in contact with police over the past five years in relation to mental health but had never been arrested in Queensland for any criminal offence.

His last interaction with police was in December on the Gold Coast, where he was spoken to by officers on the street.

NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke told reporters on Saturday night that Cauchi was seen entering the shopping centre, before leaving and then returning about 3.20pm.

He drew a knife from his backpack and began stabbing shoppers and families.

A single officer, Inspector Amy Scott, happened to be nearby and responded, fatally shooting the offender after being directed to level five by members of the public.

She is being praised for her “enormous courage and bravery”.

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb said Scott was doing well under difficult circumstances.

“She showed enormous courage and bravery,” Webb said.

“It was an awful situation … but it could have been much worse.”

The Westfield will be closed on Sunday and remain a crime scene for several days.

It’s unclear when the shopping centre will re-open.
