PWHL playoff clinching scenarios: Ottawa must win in regulation

It’s going to be a dramatic finish Sunday to the inaugural PWHL regular season.

Ottawa travels to Toronto hoping to claim a playoff berth. The team will earn the fourth and final spot in the playoffs if it defeats Toronto in regulation.

Minnesota, the other team riding on Sunday’s result, will grab a place in the next round if Toronto wins in any fashion, or if Ottawa wins in OT or a shootout.

If Ottawa loses in regulation, OT or a shootout, the team will be eliminated.

The top four teams in the PWHL regular-season standings qualify for the post-season, which will consist of two best-of-five semifinals and a best-of-five final for the Walter Cup.

Toronto and Montreal already punched their tickets to the playoffs. Boston secured its spot with a 4-3 win over Montreal on Saturday.

Toronto is guaranteed first place in the standings and can choose its semifinal opponent between the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds.

New York is mathematically eliminated from post-season contention.

The puck drops at the Mattamy Athletic Centre on Sunday at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT.
