Police launch homicide probe after man fatally stabbed in Balmain, car found alight nearby

Homicide police are investigating whether a fatal stabbing in Sydney’s inner west and a nearby car fire are related.

Officers were called to Donnelly Street in Balmain about 3.30pm on Saturday where they found a man in his 30s suffering facial injuries and stab wounds to his torso.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.

Police said the man underwent surgery but died in hospital.

He is yet to be formally identified.

Police have been told the man was injured during an altercation with two others before the pair fled in a vehicle.

A short time later, police were notified of a vehicle fire in the nearby suburb of Five Dock.

A firearm recovered from the burning vehicle has been sent for forensic examination.

Crime scenes have been established at Balmain and Five Dock as police work to determine whether the two incidents are linked.

Anyone with information is urged to come forward.
