Johnny Depp rumoured to be in talks for major career move

Johnny Depp is rumoured to be making a potential comeback to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

According to People magazine, Depp is open to talks with Disney about reprising the role of Captain Jack Sparrow, despite being dropped in the wake of ex-wife Amber Heard’s allegations of domestic violence against him.

“Anything is possible,” an insider told the publication.

“If it’s the right project, he’ll do it.”

Earlier, The New York Times had reported that Disney were “seemingly inching the door open” on a possible working relationship with the actor.

Rumours about Depp’s return to the franchise began to intensify after the actor’s defamation case against Heard.

One report by Poptopic claimed that Depp had been offered a USD $300 million (AUD $450 million) contract to reprise his role.

Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed that work had begun on two separate scripts, telling The Times that one featured Margot Robbie, whilst the other did not.

Regarding Depp’s possible return, Bruckheimer kept the door open, telling the publication: “The future is yet to be decided.”

‘Box-office treasure’

“I absolutely believe post (defamation) verdict that Pirates is primed for rebooting Johnny as Captain Jack,” one former Disney executive told People.

“There is just too much potential box-office treasure for a beloved character deeply embedded in the Disney culture.”

Depp made a triumphant public comeback at Cannes Film Festival in May.

His latest project, historical drama Jeanne du Barry, sees Depp play King Louis XV and starring alongside French actress Maiwenn, Pierre Richard and Benjamin Lavernhe.

Depp was pictured with his castmates on the red carpet, posing for pictures in a simple three-piece black suit ahead of the film’s premiere screening, which kicked off the two-week festival.

The project is his first major film appearance since his high-profile defamation case.

Depp was greeted by hordes of fans as he arrived, with some holding banners that read “viva Johnny” and “we love Johnny”.

The actor reportedly became visibly emotional after the film received a seven-minute standing ovation following the screening.
