José Mateus Correia Silva, 28, was reportedly working out with pals when he suddenly went into cardiac arrest and was rushed to a nearby fire station for medical aid, according to the New York Post.
Attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
The award-winning muscle man died on Nov. 22, leaving behind a wife, parents and siblings, according to several reports. He was laid to rest two days later in Brazil.
“I want to thank the entire team that tried to save his life,” his brother, Tiago, said in a statement after he died, noting that Jose had no prior health conditions. “They were all very professional and provided all the support.”
While Silva no longer competed as a bodybuilder, he finished in ninth place in the 2018 South American championship in the men’s physique class up to 179 centimetres, according to the U.K. Daily Mail.

Retired from competition, Silva liked maintaining his physique while coaching athletes. He created social media content and ran a supplement chain and nutrition line.
“Heaven gained an angel. We are deeply saddened. He was so loved,” Tiago said. “We’ve received so many kind messages, flowers, and expressions of support.”
In September, 19-year-old Matheus Pavlak died of an apparent heart attack. Last summer, bodybuilding influencer Jo Lindner reportedly died of an aneurysm at 30.
