The man was treated for serious injuries by paramedics before he was taken to Launceston General Hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition.
Tasmania Police inspector Luke Manhood said on Wednesday night: “Witnesses reported a group of people wearing dark, hooded clothing in the area at the time.”
He urged anyone with information about their identity or identities to come forward.
“This is a serious incident, and we will be focusing our efforts on finding the offender or offenders involved,” he said.
Tasmania Police arrested a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old overnight.
The teens are assisting with police inquiries, as authorities continue to call for information about the hooded group spotted at the scene.
Blood was “everywhere” around an external toilet block near the shopping centre’s Kmart entrance, according to The Mercury.
“Police remain at the scene,” Tasmania Police said.
