Willie Mason weighs in on Josh Addo-Carr future following drugs saga

NRL great Willie Mason has cast doubt over the future of Josh Addo-Carr at the Bulldogs following the superstar winger’s positive drugs test.

Addo-Carr threw his side’s NRL finals preparations into disarray when he returned a positive test for cocaine while driving.

He was then tested a second time, with the sample sent away for further analysis. That also returned a positive test.

Addo-Carr told Bulldogs officials he is adamant he did not take cocaine in the lead-up to last week’s test, and is at a loss to explain the positive result.

His lawyer Elias Tabchouria on Friday said his client had agreed to accept the result from police and pay a fine.

But he could still face further punishment from his club with reports he could be cut as early as this week.

Bulldogs football boss Phil Gould had already suggested the 29-year-old’s future at the club would fall under the spotlight should his secondary test come back positive.

And Mason, who spent half of his NRL career at the Bulldogs, said the fact ‘Fox’ initially lied to Gould has him in a bad spot.

“It’s not a good position for Fox at the moment,” he told 7NEWS.

“Simple fact, we spoke last week if he hadn’t lied to Gus Gould — that’s one person you never ever lie to, if he had of told the truth we’d be talking about something different here.

“Me knowing the club, where the club is heading, the culture that they are setting. This is not a part of their plan.

“Their next steps, it’ll go through the board, it’ll go through Gus, it’ll go through the coaches and they’re the ones that are going to have to make this decision.

“They love Fox, I love Fox personally, I think he’s a great person. He made a wrong decision at the wrong time.”

Mason doubled down on his thoughts on who Addo-Carr chooses to hang out with.

“He’s just messed up and I said it with Latrell (Mitchell). It’s the people you hang out with,” he continued.

“Ten years ago if I’m in a predicament like that and I’m in that position, they go ‘don’t touch that, don’t touch that.’ You’ve got three weeks, four weeks max and you can go to Vegas, you can go to Mexico, you can do what you want … but not right now.

“It’s just a lesson on hanging out with better people.

“If he was hanging with people that actually cared about him there’s no way in the world that he’d be in this position.”
