Speaking with StokeonTrentLive a few weeks later, his wife Danielle said “the last few months have been incredibly hard, but he was so strong”.

The couple married in November 2023, just months after his diagnosis.

“Loving him was an honour,” she reflected.

Danielle recalled Stubbs’ remarkable attitude throughout his illness: “He didn’t want to listen to the prognosis and wanted to prove the doctors wrong.

“I know he was fighting to be with me.”

She first announced Stubbs’ death on his Instagram account, expressing how difficult it was to contemplate the future without him.

“With an utterly shattered and devastated heart, I’m sharing that the love of my life, my favourite person in the whole world passed away last night at 11.05pm,” she said.

“It’s hard to even think about the future because it’s not the life we imagined,” she said, adding that she aimed to “keep making him proud”.

“We had to create our own hope on this cancer journey that began a year ago in August.

“We became so much stronger as a couple and though we have gone through hell, we had some of our happiest moments and memories together.”

She also shared her sympathies for Stubbs’ daughter, Leah, and the rest of his family.

“Danny was the most beautiful person inside and out. He had a sparkle in his eyes and a smile that would light up a room,” Danielle fondly remembered.

Stubbs died at St Luke’s Hospice in Winsford on August 24, a year after his diagnosis.

The cancer had spread to his lymph nodes and spine.

Adenocarcinoma is the most common form of oesophageal cancer and begins in the cells of the glands in the oesophagus, according to Mayo Clinic.

The couple wed three months after Stubbs learned of his cancer diagnosis, announcing the happy news on Instagram at the time.

“Yesterday I got to marry the love of my life and the most innocent, kind, forgiving, and thoughtful person I could ever wish to meet,” he wrote.

“We are truly grateful for everything people have given and done for us especially over the past few months.

“Don’t know what we would have done without all the support.”
