Superstar swimmer Emma McKeon has won more gold medals than another Australian, but is she our greatest Olympian of all time?
McKeon went past Ian Thorpe (five gold) on Sunday morning (AEST) as Australia won the 4x100m freestyle relay.
The superstar swimmer now stands alone as the most decorated with six gold medals among 12 in total.

She is now firmly in the conversation as Australia’s greatest alongside Thorpe, Dawn Fraser and Betty Cuthbert.
And who better to answer the question of where she stands among the greats than legendary broadcaster Bruce McAvaney.
“It’s a great question, there’s one thing you can’t argue, Emma is our most decorated athlete ever, 12 medals, six gold and seven medals at one Olympic Games,” McAvaney told 7NEWS.
“But when you have a look at the all-time Australian list, I still think you’ve got to look at Dawn Fraser — three 100m gold medals in three consecutive Olympics. And Betty Cuthbert, the only male or female to win a gold medal in 100m, 200m and 400m events.
“And then there’s Thorpey, what he did in Sydney was remarkable in that relay and to win three individual gold medals over two Olympics… I’ve got them just in front.”
McAvaney added that McKeon is definitely “in the conversation” and two more superstars could join the group by the end of the Olympics.
“Emma is in the conversation. I’ve got Betty, Dawn and Thorpey at the absolute top and in a weeks’ time, I think we’re going to talk about Arnie (Titmus) and Jess (Fox) in the same league,” he said.
Titmus is one more gold away from completing the 200m-400m freestyle double at consecutive Olympics.
And Fox is gunning for an unprecedented golden treble, having taken gold in the K1 event on Monday morning (AEST).
The 30-year-old now turns attention to the C1 and kayak cross as she hopes to join swimmer Shane Gould in 1972 as the only Australian to win three individual gold medals at the same Games.
