(NewsNation) — Vice President Kamala Harris gained wins in several states but by margins much slimmer than those delivered by President Joe Biden in 2020, as many states swung harder to the right.
At least ten states that went for Harris had large shifts in how much they chose blue this time around.
These include New York, Illinois and New Jersey.
Here’s which states shifted the most red and by how much according to NewsNation/Decision Desk HQ projections and Federal Elections Commission filings from 2020.
New York
New York had the biggest overall shift among all states and held the largest margin of difference between Biden and Harris.
Harris won New York by 10 percentage points over President-elect Donald Trump, but the number was much lower than Biden’s 23-point win in 2020.
The discrepancy amounted to the state going right by 13.1 percentage points this year.
New Jersey
New Jersey swung more right by 11.9 percentage points.
While Harris took the state over Trump by four points, it was a far road from when Biden took the Garden State by a comfortable 15.9 points in the last election.
Maryland
The third highest discrepancy occurred in Maryland, which swung right by 10.2 percentage points from 2020.
Biden won the state over Trump with 33 points, but Harris was able to edge the former president with 23 points this year.
Illinois
The state has been reliably blue and has voted for the Democratic nominee for president for the last nine elections, but Harris wasn’t able to hold on to the same comfortable margin as Biden.
Harris scored a victory with 8 percentage points over Trump on Election Day.
Biden won Illinois by 17 points, so the state swung right by 9 percentage points from 2020.

Massachusetts and Connecticut
Harris comfortably secured her victory in Massachusetts with 25 points over Trump.
However, the state went to Biden with 33.5 points in 2020, which means the state swung 8.5 points more to the right.
Connecticut similarly swung 8.1 points more to the right, with Harris gaining a 12-point victory over Biden’s 20.1-point win in 2020.
