In these United States, we’ve got plenty of variety. Different states have different automotive maneuvers, different levels of driver aggression, different laws about what you can and can’t buy. Today, though, we need to settle something important about the difference between the states: Which one is the worst?
Not the worst in every aspect — you can rest easy, residents of [insert your state here] — but the worst states to drive in. Whether daily driving to work, or passing through on a long road trip, what’s the worst state to find yourself behind the wheel?
As a lifelong Northeasterner, my vote goes to Massachusetts — and it does so for a combination of factors. Boston may be well known as a hub of aggressive drivers, bad traffic, and Escherian streets, but it’s only the tip of the iceberg that makes Massachusetts so bad to drive in.
First, the condition of the roads. Massachusetts sees regular freeze-thaw cycles, as much of the Northeast does, but Mass seems the worst at dealing with the resulting damage. I’ve driven roads in that state that seemed like they’d been hit by the Blitz, and never repaired in the intervening decades.
Then you get the drivers, the Massholes, who seemingly aim to die historic on the fury road. I cannot predict the movements of a Masshole, ever, and that terrifies me. At least in New York, there’s an order to things, but Massachusetts is utter chaos.
