I’m heading to California this week to test four new Toyotas in the span of two short days, and to help me guide the intense review process, I have a question: What do you want to know about the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser and the 2024 Toyota Tacoma Hybrid?
The new Land Cruiser is heading back to the United States for the first time in two years with a complete redesign intended the be a big ol’ off-road beast, though it’s smaller than the LC we used to get — it’s sold as the Prado elsewhere, and is a twin of the Lexus GX. It’s got all the heritage Land Cruiser hallmarks like full-time four-wheel drive and boxy head-turning styling, but it’s powered by a new 2.4-liter inline-4 hybrid powertrain with an 8-speed automatic transmission. You’ll have a hefty 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque, all packed with some delicious premium features.
Meanwhile, the Tacoma HEV is still a little bit of a mystery. This all-new Tacoma has seen a full redesign, and we’ll have a shot at driving both of its available hybrid powertrains. You’ve got a choice between the standard i-Forse turbocharged 2.4-liter inline-4 engine that can make 278 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque, or the optional i-Force Max version with up to 326 hp and 465 lb-ft.
These are two off-road-ready vehicles with very different price points. Toyota’s current estimates put the starting price of the Land Cruiser at around $55,000, with the Tacoma starting around $31,000.
