West Aussies warned about cherry shortage in lead-up to Christmas

Cherry lovers are being warned they may have to go without the beloved festive staple this year after WA farmers were dealt a devastating blow.

Cherry growers in WA faced extremely difficult conditions this harvest season, with many losing a significant number of crops.

The hot, dry and windy summer weather, compounded by an unusually warm winter impacted the ability to grow the sweet little fruits.

Southern Forests Food Council revealed some orchards in Manjimup lost more than 90 per cent of their crops, which took a severe financial toll on the growers.

“Cherries are a high-risk, high-reward crop,” Chair of the Southern Forests Food Council Arthur Wilson said.

“While farmers are accustomed to some variability, this season’s challenges have been unprecedented.”

Despite shoppers being told to prepare for low locally-produce cherry stocks this year, Mr Wilson assured the community that new cherry plantations are being established in WA to stabilise local supply.

“It’s an incredibly challenging time for our producers, but we are committed to working alongside them, promoting sustainability and championing their efforts in the face of adversity,” Mr Wilson said.

“We encourage shoppers to help support local farmers wherever possible when making food choices too.”

In some better news for cherry lovers, the Manjimup Cherry Harmony Festival will still go ahead on Saturday, December 14.

“Whilst fresh local cherries are unlikely to be the star of the show, plenty of cherry-inspired offerings will be available from the 150 stalls and events,” Southern Forests Food Council stated.

“These include cherry jams, chutneys, beverages, and other gourmet products, plus arts and crafts.”
