Weather tracker: Rain to give way to searing heat at Paris Olympics | Environment

The Paris Olympics had a soggy start but conditions improved over the weekend. Meteorologists now expect temperatures to soar early this week, prompting several warnings.

The weather in the French capital has been forecast to climb to 35C (95F) on Tuesday, about 8C above average for the time of year, making some competitions more challenging for the athletes. Southern parts of France are likely to experience the hottest weather, reaching the high 30s celsius, nearly 10C above average.

The heat is likely to go out with a bang next week as low pressure pushes in from the south, bringing thunderstorms to swaths of the country midweek.

Spain is also preparing for hot weather, with warnings issued as temperatures are likely to exceed 40C this week.

Meanwhile, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Belarus have issued warnings for strong winds and heavy rain, with extreme weather predicted in Latvia and Estonia.

The storms are caused by an area of low pressure that pushed north-eastwards from Poland on Sunday and rapidly strengthened over the region. More than 150mm of rain within 24 hours is expected in some parts with the potential for some thunderstorms and winds of about 60mph (17 km/h) in coastal areas.

In Asia, despite Typhoon Gaemi having decayed towards the end of last week, its effects are still being felt in parts of China as heavy rain continued at the weekend.

A resulting landslide in Hunan province on Sunday killed 15 people. Other regions of Asia have also been hit by torrential rain, with the effects of the monsoon season felt in India, where three people died when a basement flooded.

In the tropical Atlantic, there has been reduced hurricane activity after Hurricane Beryl last month, thanks to an influx of dry and dusty air from north Africa. However, it is likely to become more active again in August as this dusty air dissipates. Forecasters are monitoring a potential area of tropical development in the Caribbean.
