If you’re familiar with the Drift King, Keiichi Tsuchiya, you know he loves to take very cool cars and get them slideways on track. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is a very cool car, as are the RN22e and Vision N 74 concepts. So naturally, when Hyundai handed Tsuchiya the keys to all three, he wasted no time kicking their tails out.
In a video for Best MOTORing, Tsuchiya got to hang out with representatives and drivers for Hyundai as he sampled the company’s coolest cars: The Ioniq 5 N (including a special drift-prepped version), RN22e and N Vision 74, as well as the Elantra N TCR and a WRC-spec i20.
Tsuchiya didn’t get to drive the the WRC racer, instead riding shotgun while Hyundai driver Thierry Neuville took the wheel, but DK got to try everything else. The results? Both the stock and drift-prepped Ioniq 5 N, as well as the RN22e, slid adeptly, but the N Vision 74 just had too much grip to get truly sideways.
Similarly, Tsuchiya didn’t try to get the Elantra N TCR to slide. Remember that Tsuchiya has also competed in the Japanese Touring Car Championship and at Le Mans — he knows how to grip drive, he just usually chooses not to.
As usual for Best MOTORing, the whole video is in Japanese, but YouTube’s auto-translated subtitles mostly get the point across. It’s Friday, you’re not doing anything anyway, throw on 40 minutes of the Drift King hooning Hyundais. Then, if you’ve still got time in the workday, go watch Pol Tarres work the same kind of magic on two wheels.
