US man dies in fall from world’s biggest cruise ship in Florida

An American man has died after falling from the world’s largest cruise ship only hours into a week-long voyage.

Search and rescue crews found the man and he was pulled from the water in a critical condition but could not be saved.

The man had boarded Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas in Florida, for a week-long cruise to Honduras, when he fell overboard on Sunday morning local time, according to The New York Post.

“The ship’s crew immediately notified the US Coast Guard and launched a search and rescue operation,” Royal Caribbean told The New York Post.

“Our care team is actively providing support and assistance to the guest’s loved ones during this difficult time.”

Passengers shared videos of the rescue mission, showing rescue boats lowered into the water to search for the man.

“The cruise ship deployed one of its rescue boats, located the man and brought him back aboard,” the Coast Guard said.

“He was pronounced deceased. Beyond assisting in the search, the US Coast Guard did not have much involvement in this incident.”

Icon of the Seas, which made its maiden voyage in January this year, is the largest cruise ship in the world at 366m-long with capacity for 7600 passengers and 2350 crew.
