UFC could return to Calgary within the next two years

If Calgarians thought they were being left out when UFC Edmonton was announced some months ago, they should worry no more.

The UFC is looking to return to Calgary within the next two years, Dave Shaw, UFC executive senior vice-president of international and content, told Sportsnet 960’s Logan Gordon and Peter Klein on Friday.

Shaw did not confirm when the event would take place pr whether or it would be a Fight Night or pay-per-view card. However, he alluded to the idea that when Scotia Place (the new arena for the Calgary Flames) is built, the city would become an enticing destination for a PPV event.

“The reality is we’ll likely come back to Calgary before (Scotia Place is ready). Calgary is a pay-per-view destination. When the new arena is built, I think that makes a lot of sense for us,” Shaw said, potentially hinting at multiple events being held in the city in the coming years. “We’re gonna get back to Calgary in the next couple years, and when the new arena is built, we’ll see about a pay-per-view.”

Shaw also told Sportsnet 960 that UFC is hoping to have two to three events in Canada every year moving forward, whether they be pay-per-views or Fight Nights.

It’s been some time since the octagon was last set up in southern Alberta, with the last UFC event taking place back on July 28, 2018 — a Fight Night headlined by a sequel bout between Dustin Poirier and Eddie Alvarez.

UFC 149 on July 21, 2012, is the only other event the city has held. It was the first event the province of Alberta held and was headlined by the interim bantamweight championship bout between Renãn Barao and Urijah Faber.

“It’s awesome, I mean Alberta pound-for-pound in rankings for Canadian provinces, per capita we have more fans in Alberta,” Shaw said. “So it’s always nice to come back.”
