Truck fire on Anzac Bridge prompts Sydney traffic chaos

A truck fire has wreaked havoc on Sydney traffic, with the fire closing multiple lanes on the Anzac Bridge.

Two of the four citybound lanes remain closed on the Western Distributor approaching Allen St after the blaze erupted about 10.20am on Monday.

Traffic was queued back onto the City West Link at Lilyfield immediately after the fire.

Motorists — and those using public transport that crosses the bridge — should allow extra travel time and exercise caution.

“The truck had come out of the M4 tunnel and was travelling across the bridge when a passing motorist alerted the driver to fire on the back of the truck,” Acting Superintendent Matt Sigmund said.

“The driver has then pulled over to the side of the road, where he has attempted to extinguish the fire using a number of dry powder extinguishers.”

Emergency services and traffic crews are at the scene of the fire.

Three citybound lanes were initially closed due to the fire, but one has since reopened.

A tow truck is currently at the scene working to move the truck out of the way.

Debris will still need to be cleaned from the road.
