Toyota – apparently – is into some light teasing, because the automaker just released a third sixth-generation 4Runner teaser in the last 11 days. This is all leading up to the SUV’s official reveal on April 9. Previously, we’ve gotten a a look at the lower end of the new 4Runner’s tailgate, its rolldown rear window and big center screen, but now we’re learning that the new ‘Runner will feature the automaker’s new “Trailunter” trim for hardcore off-roading.
We first saw the Trailhunter trim on the Tacoma pickup truck. It’s supposed to be a step above TRD and TRD Pro trim levels – for serious off-roaders. Buyers get 2.5-inch Old Man Emu forged monotube shocks with remote reservoirs, 33-inch Goodyear all-terrain tires, more ground clearance, skid plates, a steel rear bumper and reinforced recovery points. That’s all very cool. The name “Trailhunter” leaves a little to be desired, in my opinion. It sounds like you’re shooting and killing dirt paths for sport. I don’t know. If you guys like it, then I guess it’s fine.
So far, what we’ve seen of the new 4Runner suggests it just looks like an update of the fifth-generation car, but that’s not the case underneath. While it isn’t confirmed, we expect the truck to run on Toyota’s beefy TNGA-F truck platform that underpins the Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia and Land Cruiser. It also can be found in the Lexus GX 550 and LX 600. Basically, if it’s a Toyota product meant to be tough, TNGA-F will be there.
We still don’t have any official specs from Toyota on what will be powering the upcoming 4Runner, but I would not be surprised if Toyota’s i-Force and i-Force Max hybrid four-cylinder motors make an appearance. Say goodbye to the old-school 4.0-liter V6 and five-speed automatic.
Toyota will officially show off the new 4Runner on April 9 at 10:15 P.M., so this edging session can finally end.
