Alaska man inadvertently films his own drowning on a glacial lake

In a video we hope his family never sees, an Alaska man unintentionally filmed his drowning death in a lake in the vicinity of the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area, about eight kilometres north of Juneau International Airport.

Paul Rodriguez Jr., 43, of Juneau, had a GoPro camera mounted on his helmet when he set out on a kayak on July 11.

Troopers said the kayak overturned and he went into the water.

Authorities who recovered the camera, found on the shore, have not yet found Rodriguez’s body.

The search continues.

Another public sector holiday added to Ontario calendar

If you are a public servant in Ontario, you have added another day off to your calendar year after a labour arbitrator ruled the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation will be recognized as a public sector holiday in the province.

Ontario joins British Columbia, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador as provinces that allow employees working in the public sector to have Sept. 30 as a paid holiday.

A quick glance at the calendar shows Labour Day, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Thanksgiving all in a five-week span.

According to an official estimate, the holiday costs $388.9 million annually in overtime and paid leave for federally regulated employers.

Justin Trudeau booed at North American Indigenous Games

On the world stage, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau does just fine embarrassing himself, whether it’s minding his “manners legs” or showing up late for a panel at the NATO summit.

On his home turf, things are a little different.

And while he definitely has his share of detractors and haters, on the flipside he also has fans and admirers. But is the number in the latter groups starting to wane?

Because it’s never a good sign when the leader of a country gets loudly booed at a major event – namely the opening weekend of the North American Indigenous Games, where he was greeted by the groaning chorus as he greeted the audience before making a speech.

While she calls the kind words a “confidence boost,” even she doesn’t believe the hype. Smart girl.
