It’s Friday, which means movie night is probably beckoning this weekend. So should you settle down for an automotive classic, like “Mad Max,” or head out and confuse yourself silly with a screening of “Megalopolis?” Personally, I wouldn’t recommend either this weekend, instead I think you should watch this short epic that’s shot entirely using remote control cars and iPhones.
The film in question graced my timeline while doomscrolling today and it’s renewed my faith in social media. Created by visual artist David Ma, it’s called “Vroom” and follows a plucky young Chevrolet Chevelle SS on its adventures. However, instead of being a big-budget masterpiece that trashed hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of American muscle, the film gives RC cars their time in the spotlight.
That’s right, every vehicle you see in the short film is a scaled-down, RC model that’s finally getting its time to shine. And it’s fantastic. It might only be a minute long and lack almost anything in the way of a storyline, but “Vroom” is an excellent little watch if you’re having a lazy Friday afternoon.
Starting with a Chevelle fleeing through the desert, our protagonist is a mysterious driver clad in black who’s being shot at, dodging explosions and attempting to flee from a massive semi truck that’s chasing them through the dirt.
Almost as soon as you’ve come to terms with what’s happening, things change and suddenly the slick black muscle car is traversing the empty streets of a mysterious city. It all looks very cool and there are some slick tricks, beautiful shots and a handful of movie references thrown in for good measure.
Then, the action changes again as we enter the short film’s third act, which reveals the limitations of the dream world this movie is set.
“Vroom” is probably the best thing I’ve found online this weekend, so if you have one minute 11 seconds to spare you should definitely check it out above. If it’s whet your appetite for more awesome car movies, head here to find some full-length films that you could check out this weekend.
