This cheaper Apple Pencil alternative now has tilt detection and a better tip

In 2018, the SonarPen debuted as a cheaper alternative to the Apple Pencil by using audio signals transmitted to the iPad over a cable instead of Bluetooth. Its creators are back with an upgraded USB-C version that introduces additional functionality, including tilt detection and an improved tip that now closely resembles the Apple Pencil’s.

The SonarPen 2 is currently available for preorder through a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign, with shipping estimated to start as early as April 2025. If you preorder early, the SonarPen 2 is discounted to around $32, with full retail pricing expected to be closer to $45.

The SonarPen 2 still supports features like palm rejection, pressure sensitivity, and a customizable shortcut button while adding tilt detection and a tip similar to the Apple Pencil’s that can be replaced as it wears down. Other third-party iPad styluses that support features like tilt detection and pressure sensitivity are more expensive, such as the $70 Adonit Note Plus.

The original SonarPen could be connected to an iPad’s lower voltage headphone jack, but the SonarPen 2 only works when connected to a USB-C or Lightning port. It’s specifically designed for iPad models with a smart pen screen digitizer.

Another limitation of the SonarPen 2 is that apps need to support its features like tilt detection and shortcut buttons specifically. The current list of fully supported apps, including ibis Paint X and Zen Brush 3, is not extensive. For apps that haven’t explicitly added SonarPen 2 support, the stylus will function like the original Apple Pencil but without pressure sensitivity.
