Subaru may have never sold a supercar, but it did sell a car that’s currently worth as much as some supercars — the legendary Subaru Impreza WRX 22B STI. Created to celebrate Subaru’s rally success, only 400 22Bs were ever built, and none were sold new in America. Now, one is for sale on Cars & Bids, and unsurprisingly it only took a day for bidding to cross into six figures.
Despite the current $100,000 bid, odds are this particular car will end up being a relative bargain compared to other 22Bs. Will you be able to buy a house with whatever it sells for? Most likely, but consider this other 22B that sold for more than $600,000. These things are expensive as hell even if they weren’t driven by Colin McRae.
So why is this one probably not going to sell for $300,000 or more like we’ve seen in the past? Well, the previous owners actually drove it. The 48,100 miles on the odometer aren’t a lot by normal car standards, but that’s still fairly high mileage for a 22B. The ex–Colin McRae car only had about 7,500 miles on it. Also, this one has been modified. They didn’t do anything too crazy to it like swapping in a new engine or throwing on a tacky body kit, but the new headers and air intake, aftermarket wheels, rear wiper delete and roll cage are probably going to keep the price down since it’s not completely stock.
Then again, these are incredibly rare cars, so you could make the argument that if you pass on this one it could be several years before you get another shot at a 22B. So maybe it’s worth ignoring the modifications and the mileage to get one of only 400 ever built.
