The $18 item that helped clear mum and toddlers’ severe eczema and psoriasis

It’s one of the top 10 most common skin disorders in the world — but most of us are too ashamed to admit to having it.

A recent study found 73 per cent of Australian adults who struggle with psoriasis hide their condition because of embarrassment and fear of stigma.

But one Aussie mum who struggles with the inflammatory skin condition psoriasis on her scalp says she has found a simple $18 solution to her own and her two toddlers’ cracked and bleeding skin.

Carly Dekort, 24, from Melbourne, has suffered from horrendous scalp psoriasis her whole life.

Her 17-month-old son, Siope, also suffers from severe eczema, while her seven-month-old girl Leionala has been suffering from bad cradle cap.

“I have always suffered from psoriasis and my husband suffers from eczema. My mum suffers from psoriasis too, so it runs in the family,” Carly tells 7Life.

The mum says this winter has been brutal on all of them, and she even tried to heal Leionala’s cradle cap by smearing it with breast milk after seeing it suggested online.

But nothing worked until she came across the Australian natural skincare brand MooGoo which was an absolute “game changer” for her whole family.

Carly is adamant “the only thing” that has helped her scalp psoriasis is the shampoo and conditioner from Australian natural skin care brand MooGoo, and in particular its $18.50 Scalp Cream — which cleared Leionala’s scalp “in just four days”.

“It was my Nan who first recommended it to me as she loves MooGoo products,” Carly says.

“I was a bit sceptical at first because I am a stay-at-home mum, and I am on a bit of a budget. But the products are so worth it.”

According to Carly, her son Siope’s “hotspots” for flare-ups are “the creases of his arms, elbows and knees”, while Leionala experiences eczema on her chest, belly and arms.

Before discovering MooGoo, the family were constantly visiting their GP and “as a parent it was so stressful to constantly see them in pain and feeling uncomfortable”.

“You can’t explain to them to not scratch it, they don’t understand. My son’s eczema was constantly getting infected because he would scratch it so much,” Carly recalls.

Carly said the family recently went on holiday to stay with her parents and she forgot their MooGoo products, and they all started having flare-ups of eczema and psoriasis as a result.

“Literally nothing else has worked for us like the MooGoo products,” Carly says.

“We tried everything from antibiotics to steroid creams.”

Carly recommends the products to any parents she comes across who are experiencing the same issues with their kids.

“I tell them to get on MooGoo straight away,” she says.

Melody Livingstone, CEO of Australian natural skin care brand MooGoo, says the company has been inundated by people with skin issues such as psoriasis and eczema this winter.

“We’re selling an eczema and psoriasis cream every two minutes,” Melody says.

As well as a 27 per cent uplift in Scalp Cream (both normal Scalp & Baby Scalp Cream) sales in the last month alone, sales of its eczema and psoriasis products have doubled.

Melody says although “psoriasis cannot be cured; it can be managed”.

“It is an immune system problem that breaks out the skin. Sunshine and reducing stress can help, so can rotating creams from month to month,” she says.

The brand was founded by Australian farmer Craig Jones in the early 2000s after he noticed his mother — who suffered from the inflammatory condition psoriasis — was using a white paste intended for stopping cows’ udders from drying out on herself.

It helped to combat her flaky and irritated skin, but the cream — as it was made for cows — was thick and not easily rubbed in.

His famous “Udder Cream” was lighter and more suitable for human skin.

It helped to clear up his mother’s skin condition, and then other family members and friends wanted it too.

MooGoo has since grown to more than 40 products, including shampoo, conditioner, bars of soap, deodorant and sunscreen.
