Tata Motors to launch petrol versions of Safari, Harrier SUVs

Tata Motors is working on developing a new petrol powertrain for its premium sports utility vehicles, the Harrier and Safari. Currently, these models are equipped with a 2-litre diesel engine. Shailesh Chandra, the managing director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, told Press Trust of India that the new petrol engine being developed will be featured in future models of the Harrier and Safari.

Chandra explained that the company initially focused on diesel powertrains because 80% of the SUV market, where the Harrier and Safari operate, preferred diesel due to its better torque performance. However, Tata Motors recognized the growing demand for petrol vehicles and did not want to miss out on the 20% of the market that prefers petrol. Therefore, they are currently working on a 1.5-litre GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) engine. Chandra mentioned that this is still a work in progress as it requires proper development and integration with the product.

Tata Motors is also working on building capacities to accommodate the new petrol engine. Last week, Tata Motors launched updated versions of the Harrier and Safari, which have received top safety ratings from Global NCAP, a vehicle safety group.

During the launch event, Chandra emphasized that the new Safari and Harrier represent a new era in safety, excellence, and experience. He highlighted their modern design, exceptional build quality, smart technologies, and industry-leading features. Both vehicles have received a 5-star rating from GNCAP, making them the safest vehicles in India in terms of adult and child occupant protection.

Tata Motors is offering introductory price of Rs 16.19 lakh for new versions of Safari and Rs 15.49 lakh for the Harrier.

“Our flagship SUV has built an iconic legacy of always leading from the front. Safari is now more than an SUV, it is a lifestyle. We have therefore made the new Safari more safe, smart, assertive, and technologically advanced,” he said. On the launch of Harrier, Chandra said, “Since its launch in 2019, it is a proud trendsetter and the new Harrier takes this attribute several notches higher. With its unique sportiness, dominant character, digital cockpit, and contemporary interiors, the new Harrier is a true masterpiece, enriching its classy pedigree.”
