Take home ‘sweet and affectionate’ Vanha

With October branded “Adopt a shelter dog” month, Vanha, a one-year-old female Chihuahua-mix, is in need of a caring forever home.

“(October’s campaign) is a good way to create a conversation about amazing dogs in the shelter system that are looking for a loving home, and it can be a win-win, for the family and for the animal,” said Toronto Humane Society spokesperson Lucas Solowey.

Surrendered in September by her previous owner, Vanha requires anti-anxiety drugs — trazodone and gabapentin. The dog is expected to remain on the drugs until she gets settled with a new family, according to Solowey.

“I know that she does have a lot of fear, anxiety and stress — she’s come a long way from that, so perhaps the (previous) owner wasn’t up for that,” said Solowey.

“She’s very sweet but can be a bit shy and nervous. When she comes out of her shell, she’s amazing,” he added. “Being in a stable, loving home would do her wonders. She would actually would do well with another dog that is dog-friendly. Being around other dogs has been giving her confidence.”

Solowey suggested older, rather than younger, children might be more suitable in terms of respecting boundaries and being less loud.

Vanha is “fearful of sudden movements or loud noises, so I think she just needs to ease into a new environment. She’s working on becoming more brave and then really once she feels settled, she’s very sweet and affectionate,” he added, noting the pooch is pee-pad trained.

“She has a lot of great things going on for her. The main thing is just (to take it) slow and steady. Otherwise, she’s in good general health.”

UPDATE: Bunderful and Bunstoppable, a couple of three-year-old female bonded bunnies (and sisters) from September’s Forever Friend column, are still available for adoption.
