Stingers into gold medal water polo match after huge Olympic boilover against US

The Australian Stingers have locked in a gold or silver medal after producing one of the great upsets in Olympic history.

Up against the powerhouse US team (the three-time defending women’s water polo champions), the Aussies came from behind to force a penalty shootout and emerge victorious at La Defense Arena.

There were tense scenes in the dramatic final stages, but Stingers goalkeeper Gabi Palm handled the pressure with a clutch save that handed Australia a stunning 6-5 victory.

Scores were tied 8-8 in regulation time and Palm became the hero after saving the shot from Maddie Musselman in the sudden-death period.

“That was the moment Australia will not forget get,” a stunned commentary team said.

“Gabriella Palm can hardly believe it herself.”
