Police are trying to work out how a driver lost control of his car before mounting a path and ploughing into a pedestrian in Sydney’s inner-west.
The runaway Mazda left the 24-year-old woman little time to react before it hit her and propelled her onto Liverpool Rd in Strathfield about 10pm on Tuesday.

She sustained serious head and spinal injuries and is in a serious but stable condition in Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
Bystanders gave her first aid as she drifted in and out of consciousness and paramedics treated her for almost an hour before she could be taken to hospital.
“I heard the thud first and this really sharp, piercing, spine-chilling scream,” one witness told 7NEWS.
The 30-year-old driver was taken to Concord Hospital on Tuesday night for mandatory drug and alcohol testing and released without charge.
Late on Wednesday he was called in for further questioning at Auburn Police Station.
7NEWS understands he told police fatigue may have caused him to lose control.
The investigation continues.
