South Australian Troy Smith accused of drug offences in Bali appears in court for first time

Bali authorities were tipped off by members of the public before raiding the hotel of a South Australian man who was charged with drug offences, a court has heard.

Troy Smith, 49, left a rehabilitation centre in Denpasar before appearing in a local court for the first time on Thursday after being arrested in May.

He was initially charged with drug trafficking and possession when 3g of meth was found in a parcel addressed to him and a smaller amount of meth found in his hotel.

Prosecutors later dropped the drug trafficking charges, which carries a life sentence, following an assessment that found him to be a drug user.

On Thursday, the court heard Smith lit up an ice pipe in his hotel room moments before it was raided by police.

Smith’s lawyers argued the 49-year-old is a drug user that should continue to do time in a rehabilitation centre rather than prison.

Lawyer Ida Bagus Gumiland Galih Sakti said he hopes Smith will be home in a matter of months.

Smith has enlisted the help of former police officer turned private consultant, John Mcleod, who has worked on other high-profile drug cases in Bali.

McLeod successfully had Smith transferred from a police cell to rehabilitation as he awaits the outcome of his court case.

7NEWS understands Smith’s recovery is going to plan, and he’s been passing time watching his favourite AFL team, the Adelaide Crows from his rehabilitation centre.

“He is still curing his addiction. He’s still focusing on healing himself,” Sakti said.

“(He’s) missing (his) family. Really, we need support from outside for Troy so he can be strong during court, and he can get (through) rehabilitation.”

Smith is back in rehab on Thursday and his trial is expected to run over the next few weeks.
