Priced at $699.99, this upgraded version of the PlayStation 5 features major improvements in visual fidelity and performance and will be available from November 7, 2024.
The main enhancements include a larger GPU, advanced ray tracing capabilities, and AI-driven upscaling technology. The new GPU has 67% more compute units and 28% faster memory, achieving up to 45% faster rendering than the standard PS5.
The PlayStation 5 Pro introduces PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), an AI upscaling technique by Sony, aimed at improving image quality and frame rates. Sony has armed the new console with more powerful ray tracing that provides more dynamic reflection and refraction of light. “This allows the rays to be cast at double, and at times triple, the speeds of the current PS5 console,” claimed Sony in a blog post.
Sony plans to minimize the need for players to choose between fidelity and performance modes. Over 50 titles will be available as “PS5 Pro Enhanced” games at launch. This includes first-party titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and third-party games such as Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Assassin’s Creed: Shadows.
The PS5 Pro will also feature a “Game Boost” mode for more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games and select PS5 titles, potentially improving performance and stability. An Enhanced Image Quality tool will help boost the resolution of certain PS4 games. The new console has the same height as the original PS5 and the width of the discless model. It comes with a 2TB solid-state drive, doubling the storage capacity of earlier models. The PS5 Pro supports Wi-Fi 7, variable refresh rates, and 8K resolutions. The PS5 Pro is compatible with existing PS5 accessories, including PlayStation VR2 and DualSense controllers. The physical dimensions are consistent with the current PS5 model’s width but retain the original PS5’s height to fit the upgraded components.
Preorders for the PS5 Pro will begin on September 26, 2024. The console will include a 2TB SSD, a DualSense wireless controller, and a pre-installed copy of “Astro’s Playroom.” The base model is discless, but consumers can purchase a separate disc drive.
There is currently no information on if or when the PlayStation 5 Pro will be available in India.
