Skoda Kylaq price: Skoda Kylaq: Czech car maker picks Sanskrit name for its compact SUV to challenge Fronx, Nexon, and 3XO

Skoda has unveiled the name of its forthcoming subcompact SUV for the Indian market, set for a 2025 launch. The vehicle will be called the ‘Kylaq,’ continuing Skoda’s distinctive naming convention for SUVs that start with ‘K’ and end with ‘Q.’ The Kylaq will compete with popular models like the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, Tata Nexon, and Mahindra XUV 3OO.

Skoda Kylaq: What does it mean?

The name ‘Kylaq’ was chosen following a nationwide campaign called “Name Your Skoda,” which began in February 2024. The campaign invited suggestions and votes from the public, generating over 200,000 entries. The winning name, Kylaq, is inspired by the Sanskrit word for crystal and Mt. Kailash. Skoda had narrowed down the options to 10 names: Kwiq, Kymaq, Kylaq, Kariq, Kyroq, Kosmiq, Kayaq, Kaiq, Kliq, and Karmiq.

In a distinctive initiative, the individual who proposed the name Kylaq will be the first to own the new Skoda SUV when it launches in 2025. Furthermore, ten additional winners will receive a trip to Skoda’s headquarters in Prague, which includes a tour of the Skoda Museum and the city. The names of the winners are set to be announced today at 2 pm on Skoda Auto India’s social media platforms.

Skoda Kylaq: Price and Competitor

Upon its launch, the new compact SUV will compete with models such as the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Kia Sonet, Hyundai Venue, and Mahindra XUV 300 in India. The expected pricing for the base variant is around Rs 8 lakh, with the top variant estimated to cost up to Rs 14 lakh, both ex-showroom prices.

Skoda Kylaq: Design and Platform

Although Skoda has kept most details about the Kylaq under wraps, it has been confirmed that the SUV will be built on the MQB-A0-IN platform, the same platform used for the Kushaq and Slavia sedan. Teasers previously shared by the company showcased some design elements, including a split headlamp setup and LED daytime running lights (DRLs). The latest teaser also reveals the side profile of the SUV, featuring roof rails and wraparound tail lamps. Information regarding the interior features has not yet been disclosed.

Skoda Kylaq: Expected Powertrain

The Kylaq is expected to share its powertrain with the Kushaq, which includes a 1.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine producing 115 hp and 178 Nm of peak torque. It is likely to be available with a 6-speed manual transmission (MT) or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission (AT).
