Lexus has finally redesigned the rugged GX after letting the second-generation model run for more than a decade. The 2024 Lexus GX 550 has dropped the V8 and now comes with a 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 that makes 349 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. It also comes in six trims, with a base price of $64,250 and the top-spec Luxury+ version priced at $81,250. Deliveries won’t begin until “early 2024,” but the configurator is now live, so even if the new GX isn’t here yet, you can now at least figure out how you’d spec your ideal GX 550.
Depending on what trim you decide on, you have a good number of colors to choose from. As long as you like grayscale, at least. We’re partial to the two most interesting options, Nori Green Pearl and Nightfall Mica. If you choose either the Overtrail or Overtrail+ trim, that unlocks several two-tone options that make the GX a bit more visually interesting, as well as an Earth paint color that can only be ordered with the black roof. It’s an $850 option that we suspect will be pretty popular with GX buyers.
The biggest decision to make here is whether or not you’re most likely going to stick to paved roads or if you’ll realistically do any serious off-roading. Even if you’re planning to take your GX camping and down the occasional fire road, the base model and any of the more luxurious trims should be more than capable of handling anything you throw at it. Plus, if you go with the Overtrail models, you give up the third row, which could occasionally come in handy. Then again, we get that 33-inch all-terrain tires look cool, and it’s tempting to have the Electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System, so maybe you actually do want the Overtrail even if you’ll probably never go overlanding.
So what’s your ideal 2024 Lexus GX 550? Have some fun playing around with the configurator and let us know down in the comments.
