Selena Gomez Cries As Miranda Hart Praises Her Health Journey

A compliment can go a long way, even when it’s given to an award-winning multi-hyphenate like Selena Gomez.

Gomez was moved to tears last week when she appeared on “The Graham Norton Show” alongside British comedian and author Miranda Hart. During the interview, Hart credited the 2022 documentary “Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me” with encouraging her to publicly address her own health issues in her new book, “I Haven’t Been Entirely Honest with You.”

“It’s extraordinary I’m on the show with Selena. It makes me quite emotional,” Hart said. “When I saw your documentary on Apple about your illness struggles, I was thinking, ‘Do I share? You know, is this something I should do?’ Because it feels quite vulnerable.”

She went on to note: “I watched your documentary, and I just thought, ‘Absolutely, yes.’ And that’s what kept me writing.”

Released last week, “I Haven’t Been Entirely Honest with You” chronicles Hart’s decades-long experience with Lyme disease, which her doctors believe she contracted as a teenager.

As for “My Mind and Me,” the 2022 documentary takes an in-depth look at Gomez’s life following her diagnosis with lupus and bipolar disorder. The film is directed by Alek Keshishian, known to legions of music fans for capturing Madonna at the peak of her boundary-smashing fame in the 1991 documentary “Truth or Dare.”

On “The Graham Norton Show,” Hart was quick to clarify that her work as a comedian differed from Gomez’s in the film, TV and music realms. Still, she felt a kinship with the “Only Murders in the Building” actor given that they both know “what a chronic condition is like.”

“I think she’s incredible,” Hart said.

Despite her teary appearance on British TV, Gomez is enjoying an abundance of acclaim for her performance in “Emilia Pérez,” a musical crime comedy that’s been singled out by critics as an awards season front-runner. In the movie, she portrays Jessi Del Monte, the grieving wife of a Mexican cartel leader (Karla Sofía Gascón) who, unbeknownst to Gomez’s character, has faked her own death in order to live truthfully as a transgender woman.
