Second-Gen 2025 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe Gets Nicer Styling, Updated Engines And Dual-Clutch Transmission

You probably forgot the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe exists. Even if you did, that hasn’t stopped BMW from introducing a new generation of its smallest sedan for the new model year. If the 2 Series Gran Coupe wasn’t compelling before, better styling, more power and performance and new tech help make a case for it.

The 2 Series GC has grown a bit with this second generation. BMW says its length has increased by 0.7 inches, while its height has increased by one inch to to 56.9 inches. The wheelbase and its five-passenger capacity remain the same as the outgoing generation. Its coupe-like profile is sleeker, and overall the 2 GC looks less frumpy than before.

BMW’s M Sport exterior design theme comes standard in the U.S., which sees larger air intakes, different bumpers and other sporty trim bits. The headlights flow back into the front fenders and almost come across as Z4-like, and the kidney grilles are merged together like on the new 1 Series. Around back there’s angular LED taillights and integrated exhaust outlets. Buyers can now option things that enhance its design like an illuminated kidney grille, 19-inch wheels and contrasting roof colors.

Inside there’s BMW’s Curved Display that’s been making its way into every model in the lineup, and there’s no more iDrive controller, with the infotainment system being controlled by touch or voice. New heated sport seats are standard, while an optional M Sport package adds things like Alcantara trim and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Other cool details include illuminated trim pieces.

The big news is on the performance front, as the 2025 2 Series Gran Coupe comes with two newly updated engines. The base 228 xDrive has a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 making 241 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, which isn’t too bad. The M235 xDrive has the same engine but with better air cooling, dual injection and a more powerful turbo, upping output to 312 hp while torque stays the same. Both engines get mated to a new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with an M Sport Boost feature that gives “sporty response when the left-hand shift paddle is pulled for more than one second.”

Other updates included a new braking system with upgraded stoppers for the M235, revised suspension for better handling and straight line acceleration, and lots of newly standard and optional tech features including park assist, BMW Digital Key, more driver-assistance systems and the controversial BMW ConnectedDrive Store.

If you’re interested, you’ll have to wait a few months for the 2 Series Gran Coupe to launch. BMW says production starts at its Leipzig factory in Q4 of this year. Including destination charges, pricing will start at $42,775 for the 228 xDrive and $50,675 for the M235 xDrive when they go on sale in the U.S. in March 2025.
