Donald Trump stumbled onto a garbage truck with his name on it on Wednesday, and in Sean Hannity’s book, it was an “iconic, epic moment.”
“Take a look at that. This may go down as an iconic, epic moment that we will remember for a long time,” the Fox News host said Wednesday on his show. “Donald Trump hitching a very special ride on a garbage truck decked out in American flags, MAGA gear.”
Video displayed on the screen showed the moment the former president nearly slipped on the wet ground while trying to open the door of the vehicle in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
“You can tell a lot about the state of a campaign by optics,” Hannity added without a hint of irony, as Fox News showed footage of Trump in a hi-vis vest scowling out the window of the campaign-branded trash truck.
“Garbage” has been the word of the week in the final stretch of the 2024 campaign, after a comedian at Trump’s hate-filled Madison Square Garden rally called Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage,” potentially alienating the tens of thousands of Puerto Rican voters who live in the key swing state of Pennsylvania.
While criticizing Trump over the incident on Tuesday, Biden said, “the only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters, his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable.”
The White House clarified Biden meant “supporter’s,” to indicate the racist rhetoric of the comedian, but Trump and others on the right have grabbed hold of the moment to insist the president thinks they are garbage.
Trump’s truck stunt was intended as a jab at Biden’s gaffe, even though he’s still dealing with the fallout over his own “garbage” incident. Trump has refused to condemn the comedian’s remark, even though his campaign sought to distance itself from it.
On social media, Hannity’s cringeworthy praise went viral and earned him comparisons to North Korean state TV.
