Score review controversy highlights glaring AFLW issue as Georgie Prespakis goal not given

The first round of AFLW has come and gone, but has not ensued without controversy.

Moving on from a heartbreaking two-point finals series loss to North Melbourne in season seven, Geelong have begun the new campaign in style with a 48-point win over injury-riddled Western Bulldogs.

The Cats dominated the Bulldogs on Saturday, running out 10.5 (65) to 2.5 (17) victors at GMHBA Stadium, with young star Georgie Prespakis producing a dominant performance.

Prespakis ended the day with 34 disposals, 10 clearances, 12 tackles, but no goals, which left some scratching their heads.

During the second quarter, Prespakis scooped up a ground ball and slotted what looked like a goal, turning around to celebrate with teammate Renee Garing.

However, the Cats were left confused when the goal umpire waved through a behind.

Replays showed what looked like a clean goal, but with the lack of ARC technology in the women’s game, there was no opportunity for a review.

Telling ABC Grandstand post-match, Prespakis said her goal celebration “was embarrassing” but that she was still “pretty sure that was a goal.”

The AFL has been contacted for comment.

This comes after recent controversy in the AFL, which saw Adelaide’s finals hopes ended after a controversial one-point loss to Sydney at Adelaide Oval in the second last round.

Crow Ben Keays thought he’d given his side the lead with 60 seconds to go but his shot was judged to have hit the post.

Keays wheeled away in celebration, only to be shocked the umpire called a behind.

Outgoing AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan conceded the next day the goal should have stood.

The umpire signalled the ball hit a post and didn’t seek a video review — as McLachlan said he should have done — which would have conclusively overturned the decision.
