Just weeks after her former brother-in-law, King Charles dropped in with Queen Camilla, Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York has become the latest royal to head down under.

Ferguson kicked off her time in Australia earlier this week in the Perth suburb of Joondalup where she spoke on stage at an event hosted by a local Dymocks store.

“What a fantastic way to kick off my time in Australia,” she said on Monday.

“To receive such a warm welcome and see so many of you in attendance at @dymocksjoondalup to listen to me sharing my stories with the brilliant @tesswoods_author was truly humbling.”

The breast cancer survivor went on to visit the Children’s Medical Research Institute once she arrived in Sydney as a guest of Jeans for Genes.

“It was an honour to visit the Children’s Medical Research Institute and be given the opportunity to read with some of the children there this week,” she said in a statement posted to her Instagram on Thursday.

“Thank you for the life-changing work that you do and for bringing hope to so many.”

Jeans for Genes said of the Duchess’ appearance: “It was our great honour to welcome Duchess of York, @sarahferguson15, into our labs today to meet our scientists and ambassador families.

“As a cancer survivor she was greatly interested in our work and took the time to sign copies of her new book for the children. We deeply appreciate the light she has shone on the importance of our research.”

Ferguson has had two recent health battles, revealing her skin cancer diagnosis in January 2024 and describing it as a “shock,” as it came just six months after she made her breast cancer diagnosis public.

She underwent surgery to remove the malignant melanoma — which is the most serious kind of skin cancer.

“I have been taking some time to myself as I have been diagnosed with malignant melanoma, a form of skin cancer, my second cancer diagnosis within a year after I was diagnosed with breast cancer this summer and underwent a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery,” she wrote at the time.

“It was thanks to the great vigilance of my dermatologist that the melanoma was detected when it was.

“Naturally another cancer diagnosis has been a shock but I’m in good spirits and grateful for the many messages of love and support.”

She went on to stress “the importance of checking the size, shape, colour and texture and emergence of new moles that can be a sign of melanoma and urge anyone who is reading this to be diligent”.

The royal announced her breast cancer diagnosis in June last year, shocking royal watchers.

The cancer was detected early during a routine mammogram screening and she quickly underwent surgery.

Ferguson and Prince Andrew divorced in 1996 after 10 years of marriage and two children, but continue to live together on the Windsor estate.

After the divorce, Ferguson maintained a strong friendship with the late Queen Elizabeth and even adopted the Queen’s corgis after her death in September 2022.

Ferguson was also famously a good friend of Princess Diana, with the pair bonding in their teenage years before they both married into the royal family.
