Two people were taken to the hospital after a Tesla went rogue in Sydney, Australia, on Saturday and drove off the roof of a parking lot. The Model S reportedly smashed through a barrier and landed in a loading dock with the driver and one passenger inside.
Two people were inside a Tesla Model S on the rooftop parking lot of the DFO shopping center in the Homebush area of the Australian city, reports the Guardian. While up there, the car reportedly went haywire and crashed into three other vehicles before driving over a ledge.
Video of the incident on November 30 has been shared by local news outlets and shows the car with its front end smashed in. The car can be seen hitting another vehicle in the parking lot and careering towards another, as the Guardian reports:
Police have launched an investigation after a Tesla collided with three cars before driving off a ledge in Sydney, amid questions about the electric vehicle manufacturer’s automation features.
Shortly before 10am on Saturday, emergency services responded to a call at the DFO shopping centre in Homebush after reports of the incident involving the Tesla sedan on its rooftop car park.
It is unclear from the footage if the driver had control of the vehicle at the time of the incident.
News AU reports that the 59-year-old male driver and 68-year-old female passenger were treated at the scene by first responders before being taken to hospital for checks. Nobody else was injured in the incident and the two people inside the Tesla were soon discharged from hospital.
The site added that police had not yet ascertained whether a system error or driver error led to the crash, but an investigation has now been launched to get to the bottom of the strange crash.
This isn’t the first time that haywire Teslas have been caught up in crashes. Following the rollout of Tesla’s new Summon feature, the cars have been caught hitting parked vehicles across America and ever since the advanced driver assistance feature Autopilot started rolling out, Teslas have been caught running level crossings and hitting parked police cruisers.
