Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson’s status seems murky before Sunday’s matchup against the Denver Broncos.
On Thursday, The Athletic’s Jeff Zrebiec reported Jackson missed a second straight practice with back and knee issues.
On Wednesday, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh told the media they were resting Jackson. According to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, the coach isn’t scheduled to speak to reporters Thursday but should provide more details Friday.
Expect the Ravens (5-3) to exercise caution, especially as they play two games over five days. After Baltimore faces Denver, it hosts the Cincinnati Bengals on “Thursday Night Football.”
If Jackson can’t play in Sunday’s home matchup, that could put the Ravens on upset alert.
Jackson — who was named AFC Offensive Player of the Month Thursday — likely has a solid chance to win a second consecutive MVP. Through his first eight games, he has the league’s second-most TD passes (17), second-best QBR (74.9) and fifth-most passing yards (2,099).
Baltimore’s backup QB is Josh Johnson. The journeyman — who has played for an NFL-record 14 teams in 14 seasons — has a dreadful 1-8 regular-season record as a starter.
Johnson last started for the Ravens in 2021, completing 28-of-40 passes for 304 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in a 41-21 loss to the Bengals.
Johnson may struggle against Denver’s formidable pass-rush. Per Pro Football Reference, the Broncos (5-3) have the league’s second-most sacks (30) and fifth-highest pressure rate (28.6%).
Plus, Denver’s secondary features star cornerback Patrick Surtain II, who’s tied for fifth in the league interceptions (three) in seven games.
The Ravens should consider relying on running back Derrick Henry if Jackson suits up but isn’t 100%. Through eight games, he’s first in the league in rushing yards (946) and rushing TDs (nine).
