'Proud to be Latina': The Tiarras excited to share their passion at Austin music festival

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Three Austin, Texas sisters, known as The Tiarras, blend traditional Tejano rhythm and early rock ‘n’ roll to create their own unique sound.

The Baltierra sisters said they use their music to “empower” people, according to Tiffany Baltierra, the group’s bassist.

The Tiarras said each time they step on stage they channel their deep Latin roots and that they always feel “proud to be Latina.”

“We want people to feel that energy and take what you can and what you need from our music because we do the same from everybody else,” Baltierra said.

The group made its musical debut in 2012, known then as the Tiarra Girls, sharing their passion for music with the Austin Latino community.

The trio will soon take the stage in October at Austin City Limits, the biggest music festival in Austin and one of the biggest festivals in the U.S.

“We are super excited. When we first got the email we thought it was a scam. We were like ‘no way, we have been waiting for this forever.’ We are working on an album right now, so we are hoping to feature some songs on our set,” Sophia Baltierra said.

If you attend ACL, you can expect to hear The Tiarras take a rock-n-roll twist to Hispanic hit songs like “Como La Flor” and “Camisa Negra”.

The Tiarras shared how they are turning the page to the next chapter of their musical careers by accomplishing some of their goals as a band.

“Right now, we have a milestone we can see on the horizon, which is the album, ACL, and those big surreal moments that are forthcoming. It just kind of wakes us up in the morning,” Victoria Baltierra said, “Right now, we are kind of flipping that page and seeing what’s bigger.”

The Tiarras will play on the second Saturday of ACL on Oct. 12. Visit the official ACL website for more details on their show.
