President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he would be terminating his 2024 reelection campaign efforts, writing in a statement that was shared on White House social media: “It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”

Rumors about Biden dropping out of the race have been swirling ever since the president’s lackluster performance at his first debate with former president and Republican nominee Donald Trump in June; correspondingly, the likes of Vice President Kamala Harris, Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer, and California governor Gavin Newsom have been floated as a potential successor to replace Biden on the Democratic ticket in November.
For his part, in a subsequent post on Sunday, President Biden through his full support behind his vice president as the Democrats’ new nominee. “My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President,” he wrote. “And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats—it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”
