Port Adelaide mascot Thunda attacked in another ugly incident from the fiery Showdown

Port Adelaide have confirmed their beloved mascot Thunda was punched in the face by a teenager during Saturday night’s fiery Showdown.

The incident was just one of a number of anti-social acts from a hostile match that saw Dan Houston sent to the tribunal for a brutal bump that knocked out star Crow Izak Rankine.

A small number of Power fans also came under fire for booing Rankie has he was stretchered off the field.

And in yet another ugly incident, the AFL is investigating an online racist attack launched at Power star Willie Rioli.

The man inside the Thunda suit suffered a blood nose after copping the punch to the face.

“I don’t know how it happened or exactly what happened, but you certainly don’t want to be attacking mascots, that’s for sure,” Power assistant Tyson Goldsack said.

The club also called out the “abhorrent” racist comments made about Rioli on social media.

The club is supporting Rioli and his family after remarks were made about the West Coast premiership player during Saturday night’s Showdown.

It is the second time in as many seasons Rioli has been racially abused online, with the 29-year-old posting about it following a game against Collingwood last year.

“The club condemns all forms of racism,” a Port Adelaide statement read.

“It causes deep harm and distress beyond the individual the words are directed at.

“Racism is abhorrent, unacceptable and never welcome – not in football, not anywhere.

“The club is supporting Willie and his family and will continue to use its platform to educate.”

Adelaide backed their arch-rivals’ stance.

“The individual involved is not a Crows member however, the club condemns in the strongest possible manner this disgusting behaviour and reiterates there is no place for racism in our game and society,” the Crows’ statement read.

“It is extremely disappointing that our industry once again finds itself dealing with such unacceptable behaviour.”
