Plenty Of Ammo packs a punch in Crystal Mile victory

Plenty Of Ammo flashed her Empire Rose Stakes credentials at Moonee Valley on Saturday, landing a maiden Black Type victory in the $400,000 Crystal Mile.

The Symon Wilde-trained mare upstaged the boys when she finished too powerfully for her male rivals in the 1600-metre Group 2.

The Crystal Mile was just the second start this campaign for the daughter of Rebel Raider, and only seventh start overall, and although she is six years old, the Wilde stable is excited about what is to come.

“We’ve had a few issues with her, she’s been temperamental, but today she performed beautifully and I just love the way that she paraded,” Wilde’s father and former co-trainer Bill Wilde said.

“She’s got a few dapples on her, she behaved herself beautifully, so today that was a result we hoped for and expected.

“Onwards and upwards with her.”

Afforded a good run midfield with cover, Plenty Of Ammo was part of a chasing pack that set out after Royal Champion, who skipped a couple of lengths clear just before straightening.

Plenty Of Ammo, the $3.90 favourite, got home by three-quarters-of-a-length from Royal Champion ($4.40), who finished neck clear of Nugget ($6), in a messy finish while Von Hauke held fourth placing despite a protest from fifth placegetter Poison Chalice.

Jordan Childs was aboard Plenty Of Ammo and said there was plenty of merit to the win at her first visit to Moonee Valley.

“I was probably a pair further back than where I wanted to be and along the side I was able to get out onto the stablemate’s (Sirileo Miss) back and she just took a little bit to wind up,” Childs said.

“I think first time around The Valley, just getting a little bit lost, but once she balanced up in the straight, she was really good through the line.”

A $26 chance in Empire Rose Stakes betting after her first-up second placing at Listed level at Flemington, Plenty Of Ammo now occupies a place on the $6 third line of betting in the market headed by $4 favourite Orchestral.
