Plane crashes at NHRA Drag Racing Championships in Pomona

A pilot and three passengers have been injured after a light plane crashed into cars and campervans at the NHRA Drag Racing Championships finals in California on Sunday (Monday AEDT).

The single-engine plane crashed at Pomona Dragstrip during an apparent attempt to land at the nearby Bracket Field Airport.

The aircraft struck utes and campervans in the car park upon impact.

No bystanders were injured but those inside the plane were taken to hospital.

Fire department officials said life-saving medical services were required and two patients were in critical condition.

But Pomona police said in a statement the pilot and their three passengers suffered “minor to moderate non-life-threatening injuries”.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

“The Federal Aviation Administration has been notified and investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board are on the way to conduct an investigation into the collision,” Pomona police said in a statement.

NHRA championship leaders Justin Ashley and Antron Brown were moments away from their first-round clash when racing was put on hold.

Action resumed about 90 minutes later.

“We are investigating an apparent small plane crash near the dragstrip in Pomona while it was apparently attempting to land at nearby Brackett Field Airport on Sunday,” said a statement from the NHRA.

“Our thoughts are with everyone involved in this incident.”
