People are drinking ‘tadpole water’ for healthy reason

Known online by some as ‘tadpole water’ due to its appearance, people are raving about the benefits of adding chia seeds to water as part of their morning routine.

Chia seeds are tiny black seeds from the Central and South American Salvia hispanica plant. The trend of adding the seeds to water to drink is not new – and has been coming and going in waves for years.

People have been sharing videos on social media in recent weeks however, showcasing recipes and results, claiming that the concoction is great for weight loss, easing bloating and granting good gut health.

One person shared a video on TikTok claiming the drink has helped her lose “a pound a day” within the space of three days. Known as @This.is.not_mariah, described the texture and taste of the drink as “funky”, but did accept that “if it helps it helps”.

But it’s not just online influencers that have been weighing in on this. Some doctors are using the platform to share the science behind these benefits.

Dr Tommy Martin, who specialises in internal medicine and paediatrics, said an ounce (roughly 28g or two tablespoons) of chia seeds have 9g of fat, 5g of protein and 10g of fibre making them “extremely nutrient-dense”.

He also said all the compounds work together to aid digestion and “bulk out” stools.

Enjoying chia seeds in moderation can be great for your health. These tiny seeds are packed with fibre, protein, omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and essential micronutrients.

They might also support weight loss goals as they could help you feel fuller for longer, and contribute to lowering inflammation and cholesterol levels.

Chia seeds are available to pick up in supermarkets like Asda and Tesco. You’ll find them in the aisles with other dried fruit, nuts and seeds.
