A bakery in Queensland’s Bundaberg region has taken out the title of Australia’s best pie at the annual Official Great Aussie Pie Competition.
Paradise Bakehouse, located in the coastal town of Moore Park Beach, won the major title for its chunky pie on Thursday.
The bakery, owned by Huyen Nguyen and her husband, competed against 600 other bakeries for the top spot.

Nguyen told 7NEWS.com.au the bakery had previously won the major title for best gourmet pie in 2021, but they were gunning for the plain pie title this year.
“It was really a surprise for us,” she said.
“We (were) all crying.”
She said the bakery, which only opened in May 2021, could not have achieved the success it has without the support of its customers.
“They support us … we feel so happy, it’s like (a) family.”
Paradise Bakehouse also recently opened a second location in Innes Park, also located in Bundaberg.
Each bakery was allowed to put forward three pies for the plain pie category — either chunky, mince or a combination of both.
The pies were judged on a series of criteria including shape, colour, size, meat quality, flavour and the quality of the pastry.
All entries were also judged both hot and cold.
Other major title winners included Rolling Pin Pies and Cakes from Ocean Grove, Victoria, which won the best gourmet pie.
Best plain sausage roll went to Jack’s Bakery in Mandurah, Western Australia and best gourmet sausage roll was won by New York Cakes in Miranda, NSW.
A total of 1500 pies were judged over the course of the competition, which ran from Monday, September 11 to Thursday, September 14.
The 2023 Official Great Aussie Pie Competition was held in Sydney at the Fine Food Australia exhibition.
The competition has been running since 1989.
