Your beauty routine could be putting your eyesight in jeopardy, according to a leading optometrist.
Imran Ali, from Low Cost Glasses, has issued a stark warning about the potential dangers lurking in your makeup bag.
Sharing makeup brushes is a big no-no, warns Imran. “Never share your makeup, as cross-contamination can spread viral infections, leading to eyelid swelling, eye inflammation, or even discharge,” they caution.
“If you’ve shared cosmetics and notice any of these symptoms, it’s important to schedule an appointment with your optician.”
Imran also emphasises the danger of using expired makeup. “Makeup doesn’t have a use-by date like food and it’s hard to know if something has gone off just by looking at it,” they explain, reports the Mirror.
“Generally, makeup can last anywhere from 3 months to a year but depending on how you have stored your makeup can affect its shelf life.
“I’d recommend checking the product manufacturer guidelines to see if your makeup is still safe to use. You can also minimise the chance of bacteria growth if you clean your makeup applicators or brushes every 7 days.”
Imran underscores the importance of washing your hands before applying makeup, noting that failure to do so can increase the spread of germs and harmful bacteria that can then end up in your eyes.
Another blunder to avoid is sleeping with makeup on, which can result in clogged pores, breakouts, blackheads, and even eye damage.
Imran cautioned: “Mascara can get into your eyes when left on overnight and can clog your tear ducts and irritate your eyes, this increases the risk of an eye infection.”
“While you may be too tired to take your makeup off, you should never skip the removal process as you leave yourself open to serious infections that can cause vision loss.”
