With games like Baldur’s Gate 3, Alan Wake 2 and Zelda Tears of the Kingdom taking the limelight in 2023, countless titles ended up going under the radar, and arguably didn’t get the recognition they deserve. This includes psychedelic arcade action game Akka Arrh, which launched just a few days after mega hit Hogwarts Legacy. Fortunately, however, the superb Akka Arrh is getting a second shot at success, as Atari confirms plans to release the game on PS5 and PSVR 2 in March.
The upcoming virtual reality port has a March 8 release date for Sony’s powerful VR device.
The game sees players attempt to destroy enemies by firing bombs that trigger chain reactions. If your command centre gets overrun with enemies, you’ll need to transport back to HQ and destroy any stragglers.
The game is designed by legendary developer Jeff Minter, whose games are renowned for their intense arcade-style action and psychedelic visuals.
Atari explains more: “In this unexpected VR rendition, Akka Arrh transcends its 2D constraints, unveiling a new dimension of gameplay that is as immersive as it is intuitive.
“The PSVR2 experience elevates the game from a mere visual spectacle to a fully enveloping journey into Minter’s hypnotic universe.”
Similar to virtual reality ports of games like Rez, Akka Arrh will transport players into the game world and surround them with colours and chaos.
“Here, players don’t just witness the chaos; they step inside it,” Atari continues.
“Each layer of techno-infused action, previously compressed in the 2D space, now unfurls in a rich 3D landscape.
“In this surreal VR world of cascading shapes, colours, and sounds, every element of Minter’s vision comes to life with an intensity and clarity that was once unimaginable, transforming Akka Arrh into an unparalleled sensory odyssey.”
The upcoming PSVR 2 release will also include the ability to disable some of the more intense flashing and lighting effects.
If you can’t wait until March 8 for the PS5/PSVR 2 version, Akka Arrh is currently available on PS4, Xbox consoles, Nintendo Switch and Steam.
