The Olympics delivered a first full day of action at Paris 2024 and day two promises plenty more thrills and spills.
Simone Biles makes her highly-anticipated return in the women’s gymnastics after experiencing ‘the twisties’ at the Tokyo Games. But the water quality of the Seine continues to cause havoc for the triathlon, with practice scrapped on Sunday due to pollution after heavy rain in the city.
Team GB are on the board thanks to Yasmin Harper and Scarlett Mew Jensen claiming diving bronze in dramatic circumstances. And it could be a historic day in the pool, with Adam Peaty cruising into the final of the men’s 100m breaststroke in his bid to win three consecutive Olympic gold medals. French phenom Leon Marchand is also in action at La Defense Arena.
Elsewhere, Andy Murray could play the final match of his career alongside Dan Evans in the men’s doubles, while Rafael Nadal could set up a sensational match with Novak Djokovic in the singles. USA’s basketball team, including LeBron James, also get their title defence underway.

Sunday’s highlights and stars to watch
Simone Biles returns to Olympic action after a troubling time at Tokyo 2020, where she suffered from ‘the twisties’.
The American superstar takes part in the women’s qualification in artistic gymnastics, where she is a hot favourite after making her return last year following a hiatus from the sport to focus on her mental health.
Adam Peaty bids to make history, hoping to join Michael Phelps as the only men to three-peat in an individual Olympic event. He faces a tough challenge in the 100m breaststroke final with China’s Qin Haiyang a formidable swimmer after winning the 50m, 100m and 200m world titles last year. Olympics gymnastics: Latest updates
After three of four rotations, Team GB are behind Romania in qualifying for the team final.
Georgia-Mae Fenton is second in the overall indivdual standings, with Alice Kinsella down in fifth and with some work to do on the final floor routine.
Becky Downie looks in a great position to qualifying for the uneven bars final already.
And of course, these early standings are quite hard to read because there are so many more athletes to come.

Paris 2024 latest – Rowing Repechage
Final stretch and while Germany have pulled back, it’s still Serbia who are going to comfortably cross the line first here. Italy, meanwhile, have disappeared without a trace. Serbia, Germany, China in third and Italy a very distant fourth – they are out.
Nicolo Carucci and Matteo Sartori looking extremely dispondant – by all accounts quite a lot more was expected of them.

Paris 2024 latest – Rowing Repechage
Here we go then, the final few hundred metres – three of the four will be in the semis, one will go home after this race.
At the moment it’s Lithuania who are the laggards and they’ve a lot of work to do.
Placing in this race counts towards your lane in the semis and…Norway and Italy cross almost simultaneously, photo finish required there. Norway had some great momentum right at the end so may have snared second. Confirmation comes through soon after – they edged out Italy by 0.02 seconds.
Netherlands comfortably in front through and they are very much through to the semis of the women’s double sculls.

Olympics gymnastics: Rebecca Downie emotional after uneven bars routine
That’s incredible from Rebecca Downie. The Team GB gymnast is clearly emotional after landing an impressive routine on the uneven bars. There is a long wait before the 32-year-old’s score is announced…. and it’s BIG! A 14.666 for Downie, whose return to the Olympics is bigger than gymnastics.
In 2020, Downie and younger sister Ellie spoke out about “cruel”, “ingrained” and “completely normalised” abusive issues in the sport. The Whyte Review, published in 2022, found systemic evidence of physical and emotional abuse within gymnastics in Britain.
Ellie retired from the sport aged just 23 to prioritise her mental health but her older sibling returned to the sport, determined to bow out on her own terms, and was selected to her third Olympics for Paris. It’s an incredible story, and that’s an impressive start.
